The Page: An Interactive Exhibition of Artist Books

Guggenheim Gallery, Chapman University, Orange, CA

February 1 - March 12, 2010

Opening Reception: February 2, 5:30-9:00pm

Hours: Monday-Friday 12-5pm, Saturday 11am-4pm

Co-curated by Karin Lanzoni & Rachelle W. Chuang

The artists’ book is a little known form-genre in which the artist presents his or her ideas in the form of a book. For this survey exhibition, thirty artists from a broad range studio art practices were asked to submit one page (in the original or poster format) from their artists’ book to mount on the walls of the gallery. Guest curators, Rachelle Chuang and Karin Lanzoni selected these artists—painters, photographers, sculptors, graphic designers, printers, performance artists, and book artists—each employing distinctive artistic strategies and techniques. A cursory view of the gallery walls filled with pages underscores the diverse and often times contradictory forms of this contemporary multiple.

The 5th Triennial displays the most interesting artist’s books from all over the world. It is the most wonderful experience to see culture, traditions of different countries, art schools reflected in the artist's books created by the artists. Paper typographic books and books printed by the use of classic graphic techniques – wood engraving, silk-screen printing or lithography; books printed by mixed techniques by combining possibilities of digital printing with drawing, collage and object; concept and “handmade” embroidered books; books – objects, le parello and Flux books. The key role here is played by the idea which materialises in multidimensional forms, and it is absolutely unimportant what means of expression were used in the book. Thus, whether they are "bibliophilic" books or experimental or books – objects – all of them by supplementing each other and contrasting with each other help to reveal miraculous and mysterious world of the artist's book.

"Nothing, it would seem, could possibly give toa motley of effort the right to lay claim to whatone might mean by the category of sculpture. Unless, that is, the category can be made to become almost infinitely malleable." [Rosalind Krauss]

Embracing the tenuous nature of the object in contemporary art, artists today reject traditionmodes of production and delineations of media, instead making work that engages everyday materials and found objects, articulated strateof lo-fi assemblage and accumulation, and multi-sensory contextual installations. A Motley Effort is the first in a series of a quasi-biennial, one-night only, juried exhibitions at Metro State to be held inraw, non-traditional spaces featuring all things 3D or installational.

Books to be Looked at and/or Objects to be Read

Max L. Gatov Gallery, California State University, Long Beach

May 4 - 8, 2008

Opening: May 4, 5-7pm

Hours: Mon-Thurs 12-5pm, Wed 12-7pm

Books to be Looked at and/or Objects to be Read, an MFA thesis exhibition, includes sculptural, traditional hand bound, and digital offset books that investigate issues of form, content, word, and image.

The sculptural works use found books as their content, cut up and rebound into new forms using manipulated versions of traditional bindings. These become sensual objects no longer meant to be read from cover to cover but seen as an immediate and cohesive whole. The hand bound books are often language based with found text that is fragmented and rearranged. By shifting the placement and ordering of the words a rhythm is generated that draws you through the book, creating poetry out of the otherwise mundane. The digital offset books play on the history of book art referencing work by artists such as Ed Ruscha and Dieter Roth.

This exhibition challenges the notion that books are to be read and objects are to be looked at. These books are more than just containers for information as their essential physical qualities take on ever more prevalence and meaning. In the end, the books are objects and the objects are books.
