Caterpillar

2007

Recycled book, linen thread

1¼ x 1½ x 52 inches

Caterpillar uses a found book as its content, both as subject matter and raw material. Cut up and rebound, the content of the original book becomes fragmented, and the resulting form adds an extra layer of meaning and complexity. The manipulation of traditional binding structures and the exaggeration of the shape and proportion create a book that, while not much more than an inch tall and wide, is over fifty inches long. Sitting curled up, its spine twisting and turning, it becomes a sensual object no longer meant to be read from cover to cover but instead seen as an immediate and cohesive whole.
